CCHS Awarded 4th P-TECH program in Colorado, and is the first rural P-TECH program in country
Through a collaborative effort, Cañon City High School, Pueblo Community College– Fremont Campus (PCC) and the Fremont Economic Development Corporation’s TechSTART, were awarded the fourth Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) grant in the state of Colorado and are the nation’s first rural school district to achieve this milestone.
The P-TECH grant, signed into law in 2015, creates a public- private partnership to prepare thousands of Colorado students for the high-skill jobs of the future. In 2018, there will be 14 million new jobs requiring “middle skills”, suited for those with associate degrees. The highest paid of those jobs will be in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) fields.
The P-TECH track focuses on commercial and federal customers needs. Students choose to enter the program early in their high school career and are guided through an educational and internship curriculum involving local industry partners for hands on and intense internships in these technical focus areas.
Upon completion of the STEM curriculum and internship, students continue their technical education at PCC through a grant that covers all associated tuition and fees. Students engage in the program during their Sophomore year of high school, focus in a specifically developed cirriculm track, participate in hands on internships with Second-61 and gain critical technical skills, soft skills, and industry technology certifications.
Our P-TECH students are focus in Computer Information Systems education and internship paths that have been recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and The Department of Homeland Security.
